Billy Dekle has called several times since his release, the last time was on February 29th
\nto talk about his half-way house woes. \u00a0We remember the days when clemency recipients did not have to go to the half-way house, and maybe some day that will change. Until then…we count our blessings\u00a0because freedom is a beautiful thing most of us take for granted.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Billy Dekle sent this final message on 2\/2\/2016 before he walked out on 2\/3\/2016<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sorry it took so long for me to respond, we went on lockdown Saturday, and just got out for showers, phone, and email. I just got off the phone with my wife and they were in Mobile Alabama. They will be here tonight, the weather here is going to be stormy, and tomorrow will be sunny and in the 50s. Thanks for all the well wishes. I will be in touch with you and Ms. Beth as soon as I get settled in and have a phone. This is all still unbelievable, I’m sure it will be believable as soon as I get on the other side of the razor wire. I want to say again how much I and the rest of us appreciate all the support and efforts you, Ms. Beth, and the other activist have expended on our behalf. I know that you already know from your past experiences how easy it is to be forgotten in here. It takes a special person to care about people who are in the situation we are in. Why commutation:<\/strong>\u00a0I have served decades for a substance that is now legal to sell in some states. \u00a0I have seen murderers and other violent criminals released, yet\u00a0I have no chance of ever leaving prison, save for Presidential clemency. That just doesn’t seem right. \u00a0I am a hard worker and have over 200 months of programming with the Federal Prison Industry as a production clerk.<\/p>\n

Post Release Plans:\u00a0<\/strong>To spend what time I have left with my family and help to support them. \u00a0People do not realize the burden incarceration puts on families.<\/p>\n

About Billy Dekle\u2019s Case \u2013 Life for Pot<\/h2>\n

After growing up on a farm and serving in the marines, south Florida native Billy Dekle found his true passion in aviation. His early career in the 70s and 80s flying planeloads of marijuana into south Florida is the stuff of Carl Hiaasen novels and Jimmy Buffett songs. While he never hurt anyone, the activity earned him one federal and two state felony convictions for marijuana before his real trouble began in 1990 when he was arrested for the marijuana conspiracy case that would land him a life sentence.<\/p>\n

Believing in his Constitutional right to take his case to trial, Billy refused to \u201ccooperate\u201d with authorities and implicate others. Of course that did not stop others, trying to avoid long prison sentences, from implicating him. At the end of the trial, like so many others who fought conspiracy charges and lost, Billy Dekle was looking at a sentence of life without possibility of parole for a nonviolent marijuana conspiracy. Now two decades later, the pilot who did nothing more than transport the marijuana is the only defendant from his case still behind bars.<\/p>\n

Billy tried to make the best of his situation. He worked in the prison and tried to remain optimistic that the laws would change or clemency would come. Even in prison his love for aviation continued. He decorated his cell with photos of vintage airplanes, but little did he know those innocent pictures would be used against him.<\/p>\n

One day in May 2012, after serving 22 years, the previous 14 without a single incident report, Billy Dekle was suddenly and without any explanation removed from his cell and taken to the SHU (special housing unit AKA solitary confinement).<\/p>\n

No answers or explanations were given to Billy why he was taken to the SHU and why he was scheduled for transfer back to a maximum security penitentiary far away from his family, aside from being told that the warden wasn\u2019t comfortable with Billy\u2019s presence in the facility.<\/p>\n

It took Billy 5 months in the SHU to finally piece together what happened. Mental illness is rampant in prisons and Billy\u2019s former cellmate, Jim, was housed with a mentally unstable inmate named Bob. Bob was responsible for several murders, a kidnapping, rape, and torture. Because of a perceived slight over not getting the right slice of pizza, Bob had a vendetta against both Jim and Billy \u2013 the man was mentally unstable. Bob decided to kill himself, but not before exacting a diabolical revenge plan on his former cellmate Jim, and Jim\u2019s new cellmate, Billy Dekle. Bob\u2019s suicide note claimed that Jim and Billy were planning to escape from prison. The photos of the vintage airplanes decorating Billy\u2019s cell were used as evidence that the rantings of this mad man might be true, despite the fact that prison officials had no other reason to suspect this. Just to be sure, after holding him in the SHU for 5 months, prison authorities shipped Billy Dekle, a nonviolent marijuana offender, back to a maximum security penitentiary where he still resides and where he will die if the president does not grant him clemency.<\/p>\n

What do you most want people to understand about being incarcerated that you don\u2019t think they understand?<\/strong><\/em>
\nNot everyone in prison is a bad person. \u00a0I’ve met some of the best people I have ever met in my life in prison, two of whom are familiar to the CAN-DO Foundation, Randy Lanier and Larry Duke (both who were serving LIFE FOR POT and are now released). \u00a0I can’t elaborate further without getting negative, so I will stop.<\/p>\n
